Maple 7 leaving its footprint in Youngstown, Ohio

A Maple 7 member helps with landscaping in Youngstown, Ohio.      By: Ashley Carmichael     Since March, Maple 7 has been working with the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation (YNDC) in Youngstown, OH to help develop the Iron Roots Urban Farm. While in town they have also lent a hand at several Community Days, as well as participated in other service projects including an animal baby shower and a Jazz Prevention Health Set.

Another GAP: Maple 6 helping Guadalupe Alternative Programs in St. Paul

Oak 3 started in Vinton before working in SD

Oak 3 posing before they brought an ironclad bench to a Vinton baseball field.   By Jamaal and Dulce, Oak 3   On March 12, 2012, multiple AmeriCorps NCCC teams left to do great things across the Midwest states—all except Oak 3; we still had work in Vinton to do. On the same day, we made our way to Vinton Parks and Recreation for our 3 day mini-service project. Brian, Dwayne and Allan (staff at Vinton Parks and Recreation) briefed us on how the center acquired the water slide and a gracious Vinton citizen donated the skating rink.

Cedar 4 helps people from Iowa before being sent to tornado recovery in Indiana

  By: Jerome Frey   AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 4 headed to Maquoketa, Iowa on March 12, 2012. They arrived at the Jackson County Conservation board ready to work on an archery trail. The team headed out on the half-mile hike clearing the new trail. Some members cut down trees and other members tossed the logs to the side of the trail.

Maple 3 completes project at Flat Rock YMCA Camp in Indiana

  By: Madison Shoemaker   AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) team Maple 3 completed their first project with NCCC at the Flat Rock YMCA camp in St. Paul, Indiana. The team of ten spent four weeks helping out the camp. Wood chipping, stump grinding, ice blasting and staining furniture were some of the tasks the team worked on.

Engagement News: Abby Barron & Brandon Ohlaug

Abby Barron and Brandon Ohlaug Mr. and Mrs. Michael Barron are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Abby Michelle Barron, to Brandon James Ohlaug, the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Ohlaug of Brainerd, MN. Abby teaches at Regina Elementary in Iowa City and Brandon is employed at Transamerica as an Operations Analyst. The couple will wed at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville, IA on July 28, 2012.

4th Street Diner News

   4th STREETDINER NEWS On Monday, March 19th, the afternoon activity was a Pepper Card Party. There were 4 tables of players.  LaVonne Henkle won 1st place with 265 points.  Anne Hopkins won 2nd place with 262 points.  Dora Vogt won 3rd place with 256 points.  After cards, Patty McKenna brought treats for her 90th birthday.

Area students named to Kirkwood 'Outstanding' lists

  More than 25,000 students have studied at Kirkwood Community College in the past year. On April 6, the college faculty and staff honored 148 of them as some of the best of the lot. Kirkwood held its annual Outstanding Student Awards ceremony in the ballroom of The Hotel at Kirkwood Center. Hundreds of family members and fellow students joined the honorees for a reception and recognition of their academic and leadership attainments.

Iowa State Fair Grandstand, Admission Tickets on Sale Saturday

  Tickets for the much-anticipated Iowa State Fair Grandstand shows go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. through all Ticketmaster outlets. The 2012 line-up is presented by U.S. Cellular. In addition to the previously-announced star-studded line-up, George Thorogood and The Destroyers will open for the Hank Williams Jr. "Taking Back the Country Tour.
